What Makes a Dark Roast?

Roasting Time & Temperature
Dark roasts are roasted longer and at higher temperatures than light or medium roasts, bringing oils to the surface and creating that characteristic dark brown (almost black) appearance.

Flavor Development

  • Origin flavors give way to roast flavors
  • Expect notes of chocolate, caramel, nuts, and smokiness
  • Less acidity than lighter roasts
  • Fuller body and heavier mouthfeel

Caffeine Content
Contrary to popular belief, dark roasts have slightly less caffeine than light roasts by volume (though the difference is minimal). By weight, they're nearly identical.

Which Dark Roast Should You Choose?

Choose Dark Roast if you:

  • Want our most versatile dark roast
  • Use an automatic espresso machine
  • Prefer chocolate notes with balanced sweetness
  • Are new to specialty dark roast coffee

Choose Road Dog if you:

  • Love bold coffee with natural sweetness
  • Prefer French press or drip brewing
  • Want slightly more intensity than Dark Roast
  • Enjoy chocolate-forward profiles

Choose Thunder Bolt if you:

  • Want the darkest, boldest coffee possible
  • Love traditional French roast character
  • Add milk, cream, or sugar to your coffee
  • Prefer low acidity and maximum body

Dark Roast Brewing Tips

Grind Size
Dark roasts work well with slightly coarser grinds than lighter roasts due to their brittle, porous structure.

Water Temperature
Use 195-205°F water. Dark roasts can handle slightly cooler water without under-extracting.

Coffee-to-Water Ratio
Start with 1:16 (1g coffee to 16g water) and adjust to taste. Dark roasts are forgiving if you prefer stronger or weaker coffee.

Storage
Keep in our nitrogen-flushed bags with the zipper sealed, or transfer to an airtight container. Dark roasts have oils on the surface, so freshness matters even more.

Perfect Dark Roast Pairings

Breakfast
Dark roast + buttery croissant or chocolate pastry

Dessert
Thunder Bolt + chocolate cake or tiramisu

After Dinner
Road Dog + dark chocolate or biscotti

With Milk
Any of our dark roasts make excellent lattes, cappuccinos, and café au lait
